Review

Classically concentrated McLaren Shiraz. Warm, slightlyspicy, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Rating

Dense, deep purple-crimson; an extraordinary wine, with more blackberry fruit per dollar than any other shiraz I can recollect ever tasting; durif would be the only competitor. It is a velvety, luscious mouthful of fruit, dark chocolate and soft tannins, whatever oak used no longer visible - and not needed. Exceptional value.

About the Winery

Chalk Hill is a family owned wine company dedicated to making small batch, hand crafted wines of distinction. The Harvey family grape growing heritage goes back six generations in South Australia, and we now have six vineyards spread across the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region. Our home vineyard was first planted in 1897 and these century old vines still bear fruit today. It is our family commitment to make wines that reveal the unique place that is McLaren Vale, and to show our efforts from the vineyard to the bottle. To us, wine is more than just a drink, it is a reflection of our place and our life.

Wits' End vineyard straddles the plain between the McLaren Vale and Willunga townships, it is planted with Shiraz and Chardonnay grapes and has two distinct soil types. On the southern side, the soil is a red Urrbrae loam scattered with flat-washed pebbles. This soil helps produce bright red fruit with dominant blackberry and raspberry flavours. In winter, the wet clay on the Northern side sticks to everyone and everything it touches, making the vineyard largely inaccessible and vineyard management challenging. It can drive you to your wits' end! In summer, the clay dries and shrinks, forming large and deep cracks that allow organic matter and top soil to fall in, which gives rise to another name: 'self-mulching clay'. Fruit grown in this soil is dark purple with thick skins, leading to wines with liquorice characteristics and an aroma of violets.

Winery Tech Sheet

Variety: 95% Shiraz, 5% Barbera

Colour: Deep purple with red hues

Aromatics: Perfumed nose of lifted red berry fruit, floral notes, with a hint of roasted nuts and spice.

Palate: Vibrant red berry fruits burst onto the palate with spicy plums. Lovely mouthfeel and texture. Fine savory tannins linger on the palate.

Food Match: Soft cheese, quail risotto.

Vineyard Notes: 2015 was a low yielding vintage with yields down by as much as 30% which produced intense Shiraz fruit with rich textures and flavors. Selected from 3 of our premium vineyards with vines average age of 10-20yrs.

Wine Maker Notes: The Shiraz fruit is rich, textured and perfumed. The addition of Barbera to the blend, offers some vibrant floral notes to the nose and a vibrancy and freshness to the palate. Whilst McLaren Vale is renowned for it’s Shiraz, Chalk Hill has won numerous trophies for it’s Barbera and the Chalk Hill Luna Shiraz unites two of our star wines.

Cellaring: Will reward cellaring for 5 years or more.
